Friends of NRA

Looking for a way to promote the 2nd amendment? Look no further than the Friends of NRA. This is a grassroots organization that raises money in all 50 states to give out in the form of grants to promote the education and safety in shooting sports. Many of my friends and family are skilled when it comes to shooting a firearm. Take a look at the following video go get an overview.

Just what is the Friends of NRA?

The Friends of NRA is a group of volunteers around the country with the common goal to promote shooting sports and make it available to youth and adults alike. There are often dinners and auctions that are held annually. Some of these are informative. There are many grants available for the education and safety training. The laws are different in each and every state, so make sure you know your laws. In my state there are around 25 dinners held through out the state each year. After expenses are paid ALL of the money raised is set aside to be given out in the form of grants with 50% of the money staying at the local level and 50% going to national programs. Our focus is with the youth.

The 4-H shooting sports clubs in our region put in for grants. They always have more needs than what we can fund. What we have helped them purchase is supplies, such as paper targets. These targets are for archery, air rifle, air pistol, .22 rifle and .22 pistol, black powder rifle, 3-D targets for archery, and clay birds (for shotgun). We have also helped them purchase equipment, such as bows and arrows and black powder rifles. This is another community program that helps many.

In addition, we have received grants for range development and improvements. Education and training of our shooting sports leaders is another important request. All of the 4-H shooting sports clubs are led by certified leaders. These leaders are dedicated individuals who go through training to work with these clubs.

There is an Eddie Eagle program which teaches gun safety to the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd grades in the schools. This teaches the young children not to touch a gun should they come upon one but to tell an adult about it. Several years ago I was with my family in Tombstone, AZ at a re-enactment of the “Shootout at the OK Corral”. Those same principles of gun safety were emphasized in the program leading up to that shoot-out. This information covers all ages of individuals. Gun safety is paramount!

Remember, this is not just about gun education but this is also a great program that teaches about owner responsibility and safety, as well as knowing and understanding the everchanging laws from state to state.

What are the National Programs that the Friends of NRA help with?

Friends of NRA

I mentioned above that half of the money goes to national programs. Examples of these programs include the national 4-H shooting competition, International Youth Hunter Education Challenge, International Boy and Girl Scout Jamborees, and the national collegiate shotgun competition. These events can change the outlook and skills of many of the youth of America. Some will go on to compete at the collegiate level or even the Olympic level. While some learn gun safety for the knowledge, others want to share that knowledge with their friends and family. This is knowledge/skills that last a lifetime.

Some of these events are once in a lifetime opportunities. Just like any other team sport/opportunity, people learn to work together to promote safety. Some times this will create life long friendships or relationships that have this in common. For this reason, like any other sport, many people form groups to meet up and practice their skills whether it be weekly or monthly.

How can I help?

The committees are always looking for enthusiastic people. Help is always needed for the behind the scenes work that goes into making the night of the dinner and auction go off without a hitch. To begin with, pre-event raffles are always on the books and we need people selling the raffle tickets. Also, local businesses are contacted for their support, either financially or by donating items that we in turn sell on the auction. And there is always the set up the day of the dinner. Everything is unpacked and set out in their place. You can depend on atleast one item that includes the most dreaded words in the Englishg language, “some assembly required”! You can go to the Friends of NRA web site, to get information for your local committees.

Volunteers are always needed and appreciated. Gather your group of friends and make it a day to volunteer and help the dinner and auction be a huge success. There are other ways to help. Some simple ways would be to help pass out fliers to help educate the public. Helping to raffle off tickets at these dinners is a great idea. Maybe, also volunteer to help educate or train the kids in 4-H. These are another way to make those special memories!!

Friends of NRA is a 501c3 organization. They are non-political. Money raised at the dinner stays in the non-profit/non-political area of NRA.
